Residential
Located in the peaceful countryside of the Canton of Zurich, this private garden project was designed to seamlessly blend into the natural environment and provide a serene retreat for a family of four. The aim was to create a garden that is closely connected to the house. Plants are selected to complement the structure of the house, which blends harmoniously into nature as a single unit.
Concept and design philosophy
The design philosophy focuses on creating a naturalistic garden in which the plants are not just decorative, but an integral part of the entire site. The planting is placed to “wrap” the house and highlight the architecture, while providing privacy, shade and a peaceful atmosphere. Each plant is selected to enhance the property’s ecosystem, creating a harmonious balance between the man-made and natural elements.
Special features of the garden
Play area:
A large, pre-existing pear tree on the western side of the property was carefully pruned back to create an inviting space for play. Below the tree, a lush lawn provides an ideal space for family activities. Behind the pear tree, hydrangea shrubs line the area, adding texture and colour, while a common beech hedge provides a natural backdrop that enhances privacy.
Outdoor kitchen area:
This area is the centrepiece of outdoor living and offers the perfect setting for an al fresco meal, with a charming wooden table and benches under a pergola. Wisteria twines itself around the pergola, creating a shady, fragrant environment. Japanese maples flanking the dining area provide additional shade and help create a microclimate ideal for outdoor gatherings. The soothing sound of a water feature beneath the pergola adds a calming element to the space. To enhance the ambiance, a pine tree was planted in one corner of the pergola to provide additional shade and serve as a habitat for native birdlife. Metal planters filled with ornamental onions (Allium) and silver grass (Miscanthus sinensis) add structure and movement to the space.
Herb garden:
A tiered arrangement of metal planters on the property’s south-facing slope is home to a variety of fresh herbs. Designed with both beauty and functionality in mind, this herb garden is easily accessible and serves as an attractive addition to the family’s outdoor dining.
